The building of the Academy of Fine Arts, Faculty of Sculpture, is in our perception, most importantly, an educational space, a place of confronting the creative attitudes and developing artistic personality of young people. Our goal was to create a background for such processes, a place supporting art forms, establishing contacts and the exchange of opinions. We have thought about the space suitable for optimization of the creative process - functional, elastic and well lit. We had ambitions of establishing an object with individual features, which artistic quality would be visible in its sculptural arrangement of the elevations. Simultaneously, we aspired to integrate the designed building with existing historical objects into a one consistent complex.
The building was designed as if from its inside. It meant to be an openwork structure composed of construction elements : walls, deep beams, floor slabs and ribbed slabs arranging the internal space. The inspiration behind this approach was a spatial composition of Katarzyna Kobro. Numerous punctures in all three directions- porosity of the structure- form the internal space full of light- insides are being created with the use of light, accentuating its spaciousness as well as ensuring work comfort and suitable conditions for art exhibitions. The open spatial structure enables the presence of historical objects in the designed insides of the building. Porous structure reveals its logic on the outside with its three-dimensional elevations and most importantly, it’s visible inside the building.
